Class Routines
The Reception gate will open 10 minutes prior to each class's start and finish times. To reduce congestion and support a safe drop-off and pick up,please do not come through the gate until 10 minutes before your child's start and finish time. Please ensure your child is collected promptly at their finish time.
What does a typical day in Reception look like?
All children start their day with a ‘morning job’-cutting skills, maths, reading, mark making or fine motor. The children gather together on the carpet for the register, lunches and Wake Up Shake Up.
Their first lesson of the day is Phonics. Weuse the Little Wandle phonics scheme. All classes have an early morning snack time where milk and fruit is provided. Morning break is followed by Literacy or Maths.
Between lunch and afternoon break children have a combination of carpet time, areas of provision and outside activities. After break, the children come inside for handwriting. All classes end the day with story time and singingsongs before going home.
If your child is being collected from school by someone other than a parent/carer/guardian, please let your child’s class teacher know via Class Dojo
P.E
All Reception classes do P.E on a Thursday. Please send your child to school in their P.E kit; they do not need to bring a change of uniform with them.

To support children in gaining additional knowledge linked to our half termly learning question, we also take part in the following:
- Yoga session
- Forest School experience
- People Who Help Us Visits-Fire Fighters, Police, Guide Dogs, Dentist etc.
- Seasonal walks
- Litter picking
- Growing and caring for plants
- Caring for duckling eggs and then ducklings
- Nativity Performance
Food and Drink
We ask all children to come to school with a named water bottle each day. Bottles are returned home at the end of each day to be cleaned and the water replaced.
Each day children are provided with a variety of healthy seasonal snacks including apples, tomatoes, carrots or peas.
If you would like your child to receive milk in school please sign up on the cool milk website. Milk is free to children in school until their 5th birthday. Milk and fruit are provided in the morning during snack time.
We promote a family style dining experience where children sit round tables. Our experienced lunchtime assistants promote good table manners, social conversation and support children to use cutlery independently. All children in Reception are entitled to a free school meal find out more
Homework
In Reception we set homework on a Friday afternoon through the Dojo platform. These tasks will vary in style but will always relate to our current learning around maths and phonics-one task for each. For example, the phonics homework task may focus on the graphemes that we have learnt that week, encouraging the children to hunt for things that begin with these sounds around their home and practise their letter formation. The maths homework will focus on our learning of that week, a specific number or a theme like repeating patterns! Activities that are done at home to support these pieces of homework can be shared with the class teacher either on paper or through dojo by the following Friday.
