A quality computing education teaches pupils computational thinking and creativity to make an impact on the world. It connects with math, science, and technology, revealing insights into natural and artificial systems. Computer science forms the foundation of computing, where pupils learn information principles, digital systems, and programming.

With this knowledge, pupils can create software, systems, and content. Computing also cultivates digital literacy, enabling pupils to use and express themselves with technology for future jobs and active digital participation. Our curriculum ensures all pupils have refresher lessons before progressing systematically.

Adventure in Computing

As children progress through school, we ensure that adventurous learning is at the heart of our Gledhow Computing Curriculum. Through using the Teach Computing scheme, we systematically scaffold our learning to build upon previous topics and give children the opportunity to create various media platforms, explore a range of technologies, program tangible and intangible objects as well as collating data in many ways.

Key Stage 1’s adventurous learning includes programming robots and quizzes, photo taking and editing, using a PC to digitally paint, and creating music online. Throughout Key Stage 2, children learn the skills to make music audio, podcasts, 3D computer aided design, make handmade objects move through programming, stop motion animations, video production, vector graphics, and game creation. At Gledhow, children can interact with the range of adventurous technologies at our disposal. These include Sphero’s, green screen, Code and Go Mice, Bee-Bots, ipad’s, GoPro’s, and DSLR cameras.

Computing is encompassed all throughout our school life, whether that be Techy Tots/Techy Kids enrichment clubs, Usborne coding books, or incorporating iPad for research and Mathletics in other subjects.

Aligning Gledhow's Values to Computing

Responsible

  • E- Safety presentations at the start of term.
  • E-Safety resources for parents and children to explore .
  • Children responsible for charging equipment.
  • Camera, iPad and GoPro monitors.
  • We promote Safer Internet Day! (7th February 2023)

Ambitious

  • Broadening our research of a topic through providing each Key Stage with their own iPads.
  • Taking coding further than the computers with 'Bee-Bots', 'Code and Go Mice' and Sphero robots.
  • A curriculum that builds upon prior knowledge.
  • Teaching children pivotal life skills such as using Microsoft, finding reliable sources, and creating websites.
  • Our computing equipment creates fearless learners! We use GoPro's and DSLR cameras to record our school visits and inspire future written work.

Resilient

  • Building coding skills to input instructions and create games.
  • Developing technological skills to create websites.
  • Becoming independent with logging on to websites and computers.
  • Independently navigating around websites.
