Music at Gledhow

Music Curriculum Intent

At Gledhow, we use the Charanga music scheme, which provides year-specific programs and resources for teachers to create customised programs.

Music is studied every half term, including all elements of music, applied to composition and performance. In addition to classroom and assembly songs, we provide comprehensive music lessons for interested families.

Our music lessons cover Listening and Appraising, Musical Dimensions, and Performing and Composing, challenging children with age-appropriate higher-level units.New Paragraph

Listening and Appraising

Children at our school develop their listening and appraisal skills by analysing musical elements and evaluating music quality. Our program includes music from different periods of history and contemporary artists and composers.

Musical Dimensions

Children learn the essential elements of music, such as Pulse, Rhythm, and Pitch, which they study, practice, and apply during each developmental unit of work. They also learn that combining these elements is crucial in creating a well-conceived piece of work.

Composing & Performing

Our teaching includes a final strand that integrates the previous two strands to develop finished musical pieces performed for an audience. During this process, children plan how their music will affect their audience and build their confidence as composers and performers. We encourage children to participate in various musical opportunities in and out of school.
